The writing world owes a great debt to the organisation that decided to make my friend Karen J Mossman redundant in 2013.

Because that life-changing event prompted Karen to retire and take up writing. Two years on, and Karen has published one novel and three short story collections.

KAREN J MOSSMAN

STAR STRUCK:

When life throws you a curved ball, who will be there to catch it?  This is a story of love, loss, betrayal, friendship and kinship set in 1980s Manchester with all the fashion and music of the day.

Joanna Nelson is trying to escape her past, but is still haunted by it. When her mum suddenly turns up, it brings back memories of being locked in a dark cupboard, of beatings, and dressed up like doll. All of which have consequences that she still carries with her. Thank goodness she has a sister and good friends to support her. The trouble is it gets complicated when her best friends is a he.

Just when she was through the worst, her life is turned upside with something she could never have envisioned, who of her friends will be there for her, or will she find herself alone.

HEROES:

Everybody loves a hero, whether it is the superhero, a knight in shining armour or the person that comes to your rescue on the street.

Heroes come in all shapes and sizes and genres. In this collection we go to Sarajevo, to Manhattan and to England for romance and adventure.

8 short stories.

BEHIND THE MUSIC:

Five short stories with a musical theme.

Featuring Rick in Cry in the Night. He is a burnt out rock star who meets Gemma. She has her own ghosts and on the brink of life, just as he is. Together they find something worth living for.

Coming Home - Nick Novello is haunted by a girl whose house he squatted in before he became famous. Now he is returning to home territory and wants to find her.

Melody's Melody - Mickey wants to lay the ghosts of the past to rest. But things aren't always as clear as they once were.

The Belle Vue Hotel - a couple of students make a pact to meet again every five years. When the West End musical start comes looking for his first love, will she turn up?

The Interview - a short interview with a band member about how the group came together and what makes them a success.

THE MISSING:

A collection of short stories about missing people.

Have you ever wondered about why people go missing? Often it can be complicated, or something very simple can trigger it.

Four very different short stories featuring:

Runaway - Amanda who ran away from home only to be discovered on a television programme about missing people. Her brothers are desperate for information but she had built a new life for herself in Scotland.

The Search for Daniel - Ellie has desperately been trying to trace the brother who walked out after a row with their parents. Now after 10 years, has she finally found him?

The Skeleton in the Cellar - Marina has been missing for over 25 years. Now her body has been found, but who put her there?

Missing - Michelle has disappeared and the police are trying to find out where she has gone. They question her boyfriend, her brother and her flatmate. But will they find her?
